Héctor Rodríguez is making the Reds' toughest trade deadline choice much easier

It would be a brilliant move to cash in.

If the Cincinnati Reds accept the fact that they're destined to be sellers at the trade deadline, the question will be to what degree they tear things down. There's a chance that they simply sell off their expiring contracts, keeping the core intact and allowing for a retooling in 2027, but if they pivot and go for a more involved future-focused facelift, it will open opportunities for many of their top prospects.

Part of that calculus is determining whether or not said top prospects are ready. There's no point in stunting a promising youngster's development by rushing him to the big leagues before he's ready. There's a lot that Nick Krall must consider, including the performance of his top Triple-A assets, the state of the market, and the potential returns he can receive for each of his veteran chips.

In one particular case, the decision seems clear. Top outfield prospect Héctor Rodríguez has been hot all season long and shows no signs of cooling down anytime soon. The 22-year-old has slashed .290/.369/.549 with a career-high 23 homers over just 85 games played down at Louisville.

It's going to be hard to keep the sweet-swinging lefty down for much longer. Regardless of the overarching plan Cincinnati decides to follow ahead of August 3, that development is making it clearer by the day that JJ Bleday needs to be moved in order to make way for Rodríguez.

Héctor Rodríguez could allow the Reds to trade JJ Bleday before it's too late

Rodriguez certainly looks ready for everyday duty in the majors. Baseball America named him as the Reds' biggest riser in their July update, noting the miraculous improvement he's made in his swing decisions, going from a 63% swing rate in 2023 to a 47% rate in 2026 that has allowed him not only to raise his walk rate, but also hit pitches with more authority now that he's no longer swinging at junk. The 23 homers are the proof in the pudding.

Having a ready-made replacement for Bleday makes trading the veteran easier, but even without Rodriguez waiting in the wings, it would be prudent to deal the 28-year-old.

After being non-tendered by the Athletics and then signing a minor league deal with the Reds, Bleday had a hot spring but found himself to be the odd man out when final roster cuts came. He didn't stay down in Louisville for long, though, and got off to a ridiculously hot start once Cincinnati called him up.

Bleday is hitting .234/.344/.468 with 14 homers, and as a lefty bat with power on a cheap deal with two more years of team control, he'll fetch a pretty penny on the trade market. Or, he might, if the Reds don't wait too long.

As good as Bleday was when he first arrived in the Queen City, things have looked pretty bleak for a while. Since June 1, he's hit just .168/.291/.301 over 135 plate appearances. On the heels of a 2025 campaign that saw him post a .212/.294/.404 line that led to his non-tender, this prolonged slump would seem to indicate that the early-season hot streak was the real outlier.

Cashing in on Bleday before the rest of the league catches on would be ideal, and if promoting Rodríguez spurs a larger sell-off and subsequent youth movement, that could prove to be a smart path forward. Regardless, the mission here needs to be turning Bleday into useful assets before he turns into a pumpkin again.
