Reds’ offseason plans could look very different after Noelvi Marte’s monster stretch

You mean the Reds don't need a right fielder for once???

When Noelvi Marte served a suspension for PED use and then produced a -1.8 bWAR season, the Cincinnati Reds were likely concerned that the former top prospect was a bust. He had once been the future of the franchise, marching his way up Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects list from 92nd in 2020 to 23rd prior to 2024. All that promise seemed wasted until now. This season, Marte is reversing not only his fortunes, but potentially those of the franchise.

For over a year now, the Reds have cast about for a power bat that can man right field. Luis Robert Jr., Anthony Santander, and others became fodder for the rumor mill. Marte’s transition from third base to right field may just put that mill out of business for the foreseeable future.

The 23-year-old has been praised for his natural athleticism and coachability. With Ke’Bryan Hayes taking over third base, the corner outfield spot seems to be Marte’s.

Noelvi Marte is shaking up the Reds’ depth chart with his versatility and power

With Marte in right field, the Reds are free to pursue upgrades in other areas this winter. Perhaps a high-power reliever to replace Emilio Pagán, a true first baseman in the place of Spencer Steer, or even a utility option such as Willi Castro. At the very least, Marte, who hasn’t even hit arbitration yet, will save Cincinnati millions that would have gone toward a new right fielder.

Marte’s defensive performance isn’t his only selling point. He has been one of the most consistent and productive bats in the lineup, although he missed considerable time with an oblique strain. Now fully healthy, Marte is finding his power swing, slugging .538 over 11 games in August. He also changes the game with his speed as evidenced by his Little League homer against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Marte has a power-speed combo that could serve as a perfect table setter for Elly De La Cruz. Unlike the Reds’ current two-hole hitter Matt McLain, whose role in the lineup may be in jeopardy, Marte has substantially cut back on strikeouts and continues to show improved command of the zone.

The Reds have often felt like a team that needs just one more piece to make a run. Now, the rotation is coming back, the bats are getting hot, and Marte may be the key to a successful year and an optimistic offseason.
