The Cincinnati Reds pulled off two trades on Monday. The first brought former Texas Rangers' pitching prospect Owen White into the fold when Cincinnati sent cash considerations to Arlington in exchange for the right-hander. The second, and more notable, deal sent last year's third-round pick Mike Siroka and a draft pick to the Los Angeles Dodgers in order to acquire infielder Gavin Lux.
Lux is a former first-round pick who was being squeezed out of the Dodgers' lineup following LA's free agent agreement with Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim. Lux has two years or team control remaining with a relatively low price tag.
Reds News: What is Gavin Lux's role for Cincy in 2025?
There were fans who bemoaned the acquisition of Lux, comparing the Reds' newest addition to now-former infielder Jonathan India. The Reds traded India earlier this offseason, along with outfielder Joey Wiemer, to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitcher Brady Singer. Most Reds fans assumed with India out of the picture that Matt McLain would take over at second base.
But Lux may now get a long look at the keystone. According to Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall, the team plans to deploy Lux at second base, in the outfield, and as the club's DH. Krall mentioned shortstop and third base as possibilities as well.
Reds News: Former Yankees prospect Roansy Contreras DFA'd
Shortly before Christmas, the Reds plucked reliever Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Rangers. But after a matter of weeks, the former New York Yankees prospect is back on the unemployment line. Contreras was designated for assignment on Monday after the acquisitions of Lux and White.
Some thought Contreras would add some much need depth to a Reds' bullpen that hasn't seen any additions this offseason. The 25-year-old went 2-4 last season with a 56 strikeouts in 49 appearances and a 4.35 ERA while pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels. There's a chance that Contreras remains in the organization if he accepts the outright assignment to Triple-A.
Reds News: Nick Krall reveals that there's still some money left to spend
While Lux's addition brings an added $2 to $3 million to the Reds' payroll this season, according to Krall, the club still has some money to spend. "We’ve got a little bit, not a ton. We’re just kind of working through that now," Krall said.
Take that statement for what it's worth, but at least Krall isn't slamming the door on any additional signings or trades this offseason. The Reds could still use an extra bat in the outfield and a couple of relievers would put Cincinnati in great shape heading into spring training next month.
