The Cincinnati Reds rallied in the eighth inning of Tuesday's spring training game against the Colorado Rockies and left Goodyear Ballpark with an 8-5 win. Brady Singer looked terrific with seven punch outs over four innings pitched while Elly De La Cruz and Austin Hays continued their dominance at the plate.
But not everything is rosy is Arizona. While the Reds have managed to stay relatively healthy this spring, there are some lingering concerns with Opening Day a little over two weeks away.
Reds injury update: Andrew Abbott spring training debut delayed
Andrew Abbott hasn't appeared in a game during spring training, and unfortunately that trend will continue on Wednesday. The Reds lefty was slated to start the Cactus League affair against the Texas Rangers, but instead will pitch in a Triple-A game at the team's minor league complex.
Abbott's chances of making the Reds Opening Day roster are dwindling. The shoulder injury that ended Abbott's 2024 season has lingered into the spring, and it may well prevent him from the breaking camp with the big league club. A rehab assignment could be in order, which means that one of Graham Ashcraft or Carson Spiers will likely be part of the Reds starting rotation.
Reds injury update: Alexis Diaz scheduled for more work
Alexis Díaz hadn't seen the field until earlier this week after a minor hamstring injury sidelined the Reds closer this spring. Díaz returned to the bump on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels, faced five batters in one inning of work and didn't allow a run to cross the plate.
According to the Reds game notes, Díaz is scheduled to take the hill on Wednesday against the Rangers. Nick Martinez will start the game and be followed by some mix of Díaz, Scott Barlow, Yosver Zulueta, and Albert Abreu.
Reds injury update: Spencer Steer still hasn't returned to the lineup
Spencer Steer's chances of making the Reds Opening Day roster are getting slimmer by the day. The versatile infielder/ outfielder hasn't thrown yet this spring and has been absent from the Reds lineup for nearly two weeks after receiving a cortisone shot in his right shoulder.
Steer suffered the injury last season, and despite resting it throughout the offseason, the pain has not fully subsided. While Steer is making progress and is likely to begin swinging the bat later this week, his continued absence from the Reds spring training lineup likely signals that he'll begin the 2025 season on the IL.
