The rain certainly dampened Reds fans' spirits on Tuesday night, but the team's impending announcements ahead of Wednesday's doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals will have fans losing their minds. The Cincinnati Reds plan to call up both Chase Petty and Tyler Callihan prior to Wednesday's double-dip against the Cardinals.

Petty will start Game 2 of the two-game set scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET with Tuesday's original starter Brady Singer getting the ball for Game 1 which is slated to begin at 12:40 p.m. ET. Callihan will likely be replacing one of Jeimer Candelario or Austin Hays, both of whom were absent from Tuesday's original starting lineup due to injury.

Callihan is already part of the team's 40-man roster, but the Reds will need to add Petty prior to his start. After designating Randy Wynne for assignment earlier this month, the Reds have a opening on the 40-man, so a corresponding move will not be necessary. Petty will be the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader, and then return to Triple-A Louisville.

Petty has appeared in five games for the Louisville Bats this season and is 0-2 with a 3.52 ERA. The right-hander is strikeout machine with 27 punch outs through 23 innings of work this season. He pairs an electric fastball with a plus-slider and mixes in an above-average cutter as well. Petty also works in a two-seamer which he uses to induce weak, ground ball contact. Most Reds fans will remember that Petty was the prospect Cincinnati received from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Sonny Gray prior to the 2022 season.

Callihan was added to the Reds roster this past offseason after finally staying healthy and living up the lofty expectations that come with being a high draft pick. Though injuries have slowed his progress, Callihan is a bat-first utility player who is riding quite the on-base streak down at Triple-A. The 24-year-old is hitting .303/.410/.528 with four doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 12 RBI. Callihan also has six stolen bases this season for the Bats.

According to Cincinnati reporter Charlie Goldsmith, Candelario recently reported a back issue he's been dealing with and Hays was suffering from a hamstring injury. Both players were headed for further evaluations. It's highly likely that one of them is headed to the IL, which will open a roster spot for Callihan.
