The Cincinnati Reds will be in market for starting pitching this offseason, and it appears as if the New York Yankees might be shopping former AL Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Gil is at risk of being non-tendered by the Yankees next month, but New York may instead look to get something of value in a trade before November 20.
Gil appeared in just nine games for New York in 2026, including four starts. He walked more batters (18) than he struck out (17), which is never a good sign, and spent the majority of last season either on the injured list (shoulder) or with the Yankees' minor league affiliates in Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre and Hudson Valley.
Gil was named the AL Rookie of the Year in 2024 after going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 4.14 FIP across 29 starts that covered 151⅔ innings. But he made just 11 starts in 2025 after spending the first-half of the season on the IL with a lat strain. He was activated in early August, and posted a respectable 3.32 ERA and 4.63 FIP across 57 innings.

Gil was not part of the Yankees 2026 Opening Day Roster, but was called up in early-April. The right-hander struggled to find the strike zone, and after four starts was sent down to the minors. He never made an appearance, and was instead placed on the minor-league IL until August. When he returned, the Yankees had converted him into a reliever. He struck out eight batters and walked seven across eight innings in five relief appearances last season.
The Reds should take a flier on Yankees pitcher Luis Gil if the price is right
The Reds and Yankees are no strangers when it comes to offseason trades. The Reds swapped Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson to the Yanks in 2024 for Jose Trevino, and New York sent Sonny Gray and Reiver Sanmartin to Cincinnati in 2019 in exchange for Shed Long Jr. and a draft pick. The two organizations also matched up at the 2021 trade deadline.
The Reds need to revamp their rotation heading into the 2027 season, and taking a flier on Gil is the type of low-risk/ high-upside gamble Nick Krall must take. Cincinnati is scheduled to lose Brady Singer to free agency, and Hunter Greene is slated to miss the entire 2027 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery for a second time.
The Reds' rotation is currently comprised of Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, Rhett Loweder, Chase Burns, and Brandon Williamson. Cincinnati needs some reinforcements before the 2027 season begins, and Gil would be a low-cost addition that could help lengthen the rotation.
Gil is out of minor-league options, so if the Reds made a deal with the Yankees, he'd have to remain on the active roster (or pass through waivers). According to MLB Trade Rumors, Gil is expected to take home $2.3 million through arbitration next season — a number that would definitely fit into Cincinnati's 2027 budget.
