Unfortunately, the Cincinnati Reds' series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. May 21 was postponed. The two teams will play a makeup game on Saturday 1:10 p.m. ET as part of a day-night doubleheader. Game 2 will follow at 7:15 p.m. ET.

As is standard practice when teams play a doubleheader, the Reds will be able to add a 27th man to the roster ahead of Saturday's double-dip. According to Cincinnati reporter Charlie Goldsmith, the Reds are electing to call up Chase Petty from Triple-A to start one of the two games tomorrow at Great American Ball Park.

This is quite the opportunity for the Reds' top pitching prospect, and a bit of a deja vu situation. Reds fans will remember that Petty's Major League debut came almost a year ago in the exact same situation. Petty stepped onto the mound for Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Cardinals, but unfortunately, it couldn't have gone much worse.

Reds prospect Chase Petty hopes to erase painful memory vs. Cardinals

Petty's debut is not what he imagined on the drive up from Louisville to Cincinnati. His final line saw the young right-hander go just 2â…“ innings and allow nine earned runs on seven hits, including two homers, while walking two batters and striking out another three. Petty was lifted after throwing 69 pitches.

It was more of the same for the young hurler during his second taste of the big leagues last season. He went just three innings during a road start in the Lone Star State against the Houston Astros. Petty allowed four runs on six hits and walked six.

Petty was quickly sent back to the minor leagues after his struggles against the Astros, but he made one more Major League appearance, only this time it came in relief. He took the loss during the Cardinals' walk-off win on June 21 at Busch Stadium. In total, Petty appeared in three games, covered just six innings, and posted a 19.50 ERA last season.

This year, however, Petty looked quite sharp in his lone Major League appearance against the Chicago Cubs back on May 4. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one over 5â…” innings. He relied heavily on his changeup and sinker, but also mixed in his slider, sweeper, and four-seam fastball.

Petty will be making his 2026 home debut on Saturday, and the fans in attendance will be hoping for better weather, and a better performance from Petty this go-around.
