Update (5/2/24 at 7:32 PM ET): Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM ET.
No, no, it's April showers that are supposed to bring May flowers. What is this nonsense all about, Reds fans?!
The Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals are supposed to begin a fresh series under the lights on Friday night, but Mother Nature had other plans for a 6:10 PM EST first pitch. The Reds got well ahead of the problem by announcing a delayed first pitch at 5:12 EST, nearly two hours before the contest was supposed to begin.
Any fans who made it down to The Banks early can grab another round (or four) at Moerlein Lager House, because it just might be a while until the Reds get underway.
We'll update you right here as the night progresses.
Reds vs. Nationals Rain Delay - Friday, May 2: Updates, full details, weather
Unfortunately, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the area, and fans have been advised to be prepared to "take shelter". This isn't likely to be the last time it'll rain in Cincinnati/Kentucky this weekend, either; rain is currently prescribed through Monday, with scattered thunderstorms taking up valuable real estate on Sunday.
If and when this game does get underway, the intended Reds starter is Hunter Greene; if any ticket holders are eventually forced to exchange their stubs, they'd be well within their rights to demand another Greene Day in the transaction. The 25-year-old 2024 All-Star is following up his breakout campaign with a 2.70 ERA across his first six starts, striking out 43 batters in 36 2/3 innings. He remains the best bargain in baseball.
As for the lineup, catcher Tyler Stephenson will return on this City Connect Friday (which may bleed into the rest of the weekend...), though his addition came with an unwanted cost: Austin Hays, who's been unable to shake the "injury prone" label to start his Reds career, heads back to the IL.
Stick with us, Reds fans. We'll get you updates when we have something to share.
