This was unexpected.

The Cincinnati Reds made a rather odd choice after placing Tyler Callihan on the 10-day IL. The Reds rookie fractured his forearm during Monday's game in Atlanta, and the Reds chose to elevate Jacob Hurtubise back to the active roster. Hurtubise was hitting .194 down at Triple-A Louisville, but maintained a .434 on-base percentage.

Many fans assumed that one of Will Benson or Rece Hinds would have been called up to replace Callihan, but instead Cincinnati went with the speedy Hurtubise. It's debatable how much this move really impacts the Reds roster given that Austin Hays is likely to return later this week.

The Reds also recalled Lyon Richardson. He'll replace Yosver Zulueta who was optioned back to Triple-A. Zulueta made a critical mistake during his first game of 2025, and it was only a matter of time before he was sent back to the minor leagues.

Hurtubise proved enough during spring training to break camp with the big league ball club. Hurtubise and Blake Dunn were both part of the Reds Opening Day roster, but the former's time on in major leagues was rather short. Hurtubise, who's known more for his wheels than his bat, was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on April 15 after hitting .143 with four strikeouts and a walk.

Richardson is quite deserving a spot on the active roster and will rejoin the Reds bullpen. His previous outing with the Reds was a three-inning shutout performance on April 30 against the St. Louis Cardinals. His demotion caught many Reds fans off guard due to his impressive outing, but the club were trying to keep their bullpen fresh during a 17-day stretch of games without an off-day.

Hurtubise is not going to provide the offensive production that's been lacking from the Reds' lineup the past few games. Cincinnati will get a chance to get back to their winning ways tonight in Atlanta. Andrew Abbott will toe the rubber for the Reds and he'll be opposed by last year's NL Cy Young Award-winner Chris Sale.
