Tyler Callihan's rookie season may have effectively ended on Monday night at Truist Park after the Cincinnati Reds prospect made an unbelievable diving attempt in left field during the bottom of the third inning against the Atlanta Braves. Unfortunately for Callihan, he crashed awkwardly into the wall and may have suffered a severe injury.

Callihan was unable to make the catch — though Cincinnati did challenge the play — and immediately grabbed at his left arm. Callihan was running full speed toward the wall, and video replays showed his arm bending in an extremely awkward direction.

TJ Friedl arrived alongside Callihan quickly and immediately signaled for the Reds medical staff. Thankfully, Callihan was able to walk to the dugout under his own power. At the moment, there've been no updates, but his night is done. The play resulted in two more runs for the Braves, who led the game by a score of 4-0 at the end of the third inning.

Callihan's injury history has been well documented. A former third-round draft pick of the Reds back in 2019, Callihan recently made his major league debut and recorded his first base hit this past week. But based on the replays, it's almost certain that Callihan will be ticketed for the IL, though no official word from the Reds was immediately available, it was later reported that he suffered a broken forearm.

To add insult to injury, the ball fell to ground after Callihan collided with the wall. According to umpires, that was not a catch, which allowed Matt Olson to round the bases on what was deemed an inside-the-park home run. Multiple replay angles seemed to show Callihan actually secure the ball, but the call on the field was confirmed — no catch.

Callihan was replaced in left field by Blake Dunn. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler Callihan, and all of Reds Country undoubtedly wishes him a speedy recovery.
