Reds promptly cut ties with pitcher whose ERA would make fans' heads explode

That didn't take long.

The Cincinnati Reds have been looking for stability in their bullpen all season, and that's been especially true ever since Emilio Pagán landed on the IL with a hamstring injury. The Reds relief corps has been absolutely abysmal for over a month, and it even cost them during the series finale against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

But at least Yunior Marté won't be emerging from the Reds bullpen for the rest of the season. Only a couple of days after adding him to the active roster, the Reds chose to designate Marté for assignment. Teams typically have a seven-day window to trade, release, or outright the players back to the minor leagues.

Marté decided to reject the outright assignment, and rather than returning to the Triple-A Louisville, he'll become a free agent once again. In other words, Marté and his alarming 108.00 ERA will no longer be linked to the Reds' organization.

Reds part ways with failed reliever Yunior Marté

Marté lasted all of one game and couldn't even cover an inning. His current stat line reads four earned runs on three hits in addition to one walk and one strikeout with a 108.00 ERA over ⅓ innings pitched. Obviously the small sample size makes that last number look gargantuan, but for his career, Marté still has an unimpressive 5.94 ERA across 23 Major League appearances.

To be fair, Reds manager Terry Francona put Marté in a tough spot during the team's weekend series against the Atlanta Braves. In Friday's game, Francona turned to the veteran during the top of the sixth inning after the Reds had just shrunk the Braves' lead to a single run. Keep in mind that Cincinnati had an off day on Thursday, meaning that every arm in the Reds' bullpen had at least one day of rest.

But Francona still decided to go with Marté; a player who hadn't pitched in the major leagues since 2024, was just recalled from Triple-A, and owned a troubling 5.12 ERA in 20 Minor League appearances this season. Marté's subpar performance promptly turned a competitive game into a blowout and he was DFA'd a few days later.

The 31-year-old will now try to find a new home this season, and if he's unable to set foot onto a Major League mound again this season, that ghastly ERA will be attached to his résumé forever.
