The Cincinnati Reds stayed true to form with their first-round selection in the 2026 MLB Draft and took shortstop Justin Lebron with the 18th overall pick. The Reds have an affinity for taking up-the-middle athletes in Round 1, so it's no surprise they took a shortstop with their first overall selection during Saturday's draft.
Lebron was a standout performer for the University of Alabama this past season. In 61 games with the Crimson Tide, he hit .277/.386/.534 with 13 doubles, 16 home runs, 48 RBI, and 42 stolen bases. Scouts rave about his power, but he has a tendency to chase pitches outside the strike zone — a problem that has plagued many Reds hitters in recent years. But the tools are definitely there.
Some scouts might call this a steal, as most draft experts assumed Lebron was going to be taken in the top-10. MLB Pipeline rated Lebron as the No. 9 prospect in this year's draft. The Reds had similar good fortune in years past after both Matt McLain (2021) and Cam Collier (2022) fell further than many prognosticators had predicted.

The Reds are notorious for stockpiling shortstops. At one point, Cincinnati had McLain, Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte, and Ricardo Cabrera — all highly-rated shortstop prospects — in their farm system at the same time. Currently, the Reds have Steele Hall, Edwin Arroyo, and Tyson Lewis ranked among the top-5 prospects in their farm system according to MLB Pipeline.
Lebron's speed was on full display last season, and most scouts seem to believe that he can stick at shortstop. His arm strength is such that a move to third base wouldn't be out of the question either.
If Lebron was a centerfielder, Reds fans would be ecstatic over this pick. But because he's a shortstop, the reaction is likely to be somewhat muted. But he's in the fold now, and it's up to the Reds' development department and coaching staff to get him ready for the big leagues.
The Reds won't be on the clock again until Round 2. Cincinnati has the 58th pick of the draft and are ticketed to make three more selections before the end of Day 1.
