Reds now facing a familiar problem after Chase Burns meltdown vs. Red Sox

That was ugly!

Chase Burns' Major League debut was one for the record books. The rookie's second start, however, is one he'd just as soon forget. Burns was tattooed by the Boston Red Sox on Monday night at Fenway Park, allowing seven runs on five hits without recording a single strikeout. Burns was lifted after recording just one out on 33 pitches.

Was Burns tipping his pitches? Perhaps. FanDuel Sports Network's Jeff Brantley suggested it wouldn't be the first time a rookie pitcher struggled in that regard. Even the Red Sox's broadcast team mentioned that Burns may have been revealing too much to Boston's lineup.

The swing-and-miss stuff was absent, and Boston's bats were lacing line drives all over Fenway on Monday night. It brought back rather painful memories of another Reds rookie who struggled earlier this season — Chase Petty.

Chase Burns meltdown vs. Red Sox reminded some Reds fans of Chase Petty's implosion

Petty, you'll remember, made his big league debut earlier this season. The right-hander was eager to make his first Major League start back in April against the St. Louis Cardinals. Petty was called upon to pitch in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at Great American Ball Park. Much like Burns' start on Monday, however, the excitement turned to despair rather quickly.

Petty was rocked by the Cardinals on April 30. He didn't even make it through three innings before being lifted after allowing nine runs on seven hits. Petty struck out three Cardinals' batters, but also surrendered two walks and two big flies. The Reds lost by a final score of 9-1.

Petty was given another opportunity to prove himself, but struggled once again. Against the Houston Astros on May 11, Petty was pulled during the fourth inning before recording an out. The righty walked six and allowed four runs on six hits.

Reds fans are hopeful that the same fate doesn't await Burns the next time he heads to the bump. The fireballer said after the game he plans to focus on his next outing. “Just trying to flush it, and then back to the drawing board,” Burns told MLB.com. “See what works, see what didn't work and go from there.”

Burns will get another crack at it; most likely this coming weekend against the Philadelphia Phillies. Petty is currently back in Triple-A attempting to hone his craft and make it back to the big leagues. If Burns doesn't show improvement in his next outing, he could rejoin Petty on the Louisville Bats' roster.
