The Cincinnati Reds made far too many mistakes during their opening series against the San Francisco Giants. Base running gaffes and odd bullpen choices saw the Reds open the 2025 season with a 1-2 record.

The Redlegs have a chance to get back in the win column on Monday as they play host to the Texas Rangers with former Kansas City Royals starter heading to the mound for Terry Francona's bunch. Texas will counter with rookie sensation and former Vanderbilt standout Kumar Rocker.

But while the season didn't begin the way most Reds fans had hoped, the team did get some positive injury updates over the weekend. It may not be long before the Reds are back to full strength.

Reds News: Andrew Abbott likely to begin a rehab assignment soon

Andrew Abbott began the 2025 season on the injured list. Though Abbott made a late-spring push to join the Reds Opening Day roster, it was not to be. The left-hander threw five innings in Arizona last Thursday and returned to Cincinnati to be with the team late last week.

All signs point to a rehab assignment with the Louisville Bats on the horizon. Reds fans should expect Abbott to make a start for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, and again on Sunday. If all goes well, the southpaw could rejoin the Reds starting rotation sometime next week.

Reds News: Austin Hays could return for series vs. Pirates

Another player who's currently on the IL is outfielder Austin Hays. One of the Reds' biggest free agent acquisitions this offseason, Hays suffered a calf injury just before the start of the season and was placed on the 10-day IL.

But Hays could make his Reds' debut when the team returns to Great American Ball Park for a six-game homestand to play the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners. Hays' absence prompted Spencer Steer's inclusion on the Reds Opening Day roster, though his return would likely force Jacob Hurtubise back to Triple-A.

Reds News: Rece Hinds is off to a power-packed start with the Louisville Bats

Rece Hinds is doing all he can to show the Reds' brass that he's ready to be back in the big leagues. Hinds was left off Cincinnati's Opening Day roster, but he may well force his wat into the conversation if he keeps swinging the bat the way he has since the beginning of the minor league season.

Hinds smashed a massive homer last Friday during the Louisville Bats' opener against the Memphis Redbirds. Hinds added another long ball to his total with a blast on Sunday's series finale at Louisville Slugger Field. Hinds is 4-for-8 with a 1.750 OPS to open his 2025 campaign.

The Reds do not have that protypical right-handed hitting power-bat in the outfield. If Hinds continues to have success in the early-going, the Reds may have no choice but to call him up.
