The Cincinnati Reds made a notable decision ahead of Opening Day and parted ways with Stuart Fairchild. The former second-round pick, who had spent three seasons with the Reds, has been a journeyman of sorts throughout his career.
While Fairchild brought defensive versatility and speed to the Reds, his offensive production in 2024 left more to be desired. Over 94 games and 233 plate appearances, he hit .215 with eight home runs, 30 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases. Fairchild had some measure of success against left-handed pitching, and offered some dazzling defensive plays, but that's about where his production stopped.
With Spencer Steer still unable to take the field, the Reds appear ready to rely on Gavin Lux to handle some outfield reps in the interim. But Fairchild’s departure does more than just shuffle the defensive alignment — it could open up a roster spot and raises an even bigger question: Could this be an opportunity for Rece Hinds to return to the major league roster?
Rece Hinds could be an offensive boost to weakened outfield
Hinds made a memorable first impression with the Reds in 2024 after earning a midseason promotion from Triple-A Louisville. In just 24 games, he collected 12 hits in 46 at-bats with five home runs, 11 RBI, and two stolen bases.

The start to his major league career was nothing short of historic, as he blasted five home runs in his first six games, including a huge 458-foot shot against the Colorado Rockies. This made him the first player in MLB history to record five extra-base hits in his first two career games.
However, a consistent trend with young players throughout the league, Hinds' production stalled after his scorching debut. After a red-hot start, he went just 1-for-16 with five strikeouts, leading to his demotion back to Triple-A Louisville. Despite this setback, Hinds' brief time in the majors left a lasting impression — his .717 slugging percentage and 1.051 OPS showed that his bat has the potential to really make an impact on the Reds roster.
With Cincinnati's outfield arguably the weakest link in their offensive lineup, the return of Hinds could provide a much-needed jolt. While there’s still development to be done, his raw power and ability to change a game makes him an intriguing option as the Reds seek more offensive production.
If the Reds are willing to give him another shot, Hinds could go from a short-lived spark plug in 2024 to a legitimate piece of their long-term future in 2025.
