Despite a position change and limited playing time, Noelvi Marte seemed like he was on the right track in 2025. Nevertheless, the final weeks of the season and an abysmal spring training cast doubt upon his future.

The tough times rolled into 2026, and Marte was sent back down to Triple-A just 10 games into the season. He’s off to a hot start in Louisville, however, and there’s a chance that the demotion will be a catalyst to a return to form, just as it was last season.

Marte began the 2025 season at Triple-A after missing much of the 2024 campaign while serving his 80-game PED suspension. It took just nine games for Marte to impress the Reds and earn a trip back to Cincinnati.

He crushed Triple-A pitching, hitting .353 with six doubles and six runs scored across those nine games. If the past repeats itself, he should be back in Cincinnati playing like his hair is on fire soon. Upon returning to the Reds in 2025, Marte hit .294 with 17 RBI in 19 games before landing on the IL with an oblique strain. Imagine if his current experience in Triple-A yields similar results.

Marte has dominated at Triple-A so far. His OPS is well over 1.000, and he has been launching titanic home runs. Unlike last year, though, Marte has more competition to make his way back onto the 26-man roster.

In 2025, he was one of few options to man third base after Jeimer Candelrio's struggled to find his footing. Now, he's an outfielder — one of nine on the 40-man roster. The outfield group has struggled offensively, but a breakout from any one of the others could keep Marte in the minors.

While it’s nice to see Marte succeeding in a battle with adversity once again, at a certain point you have to hope he will become the player he was promised to be. He has the speed and pop to be a 20/20 performer, and he has a cannon for an arm. But all the tools in the world can’t protect you from slumps and demotions. It’s time for Marte to prove his worth or to make way for a more consistent player.
