The Cincinnati Reds lineup has struggled to score runs during the first couple of weeks of the 2026 season. Cincinnati has gotten off to an impressive 8-3 start, but it's been their pitching, not the bats, that have led the way. But a strange absence from the Louisville Bats' lineup on Tuesday could be a sign that reinforcements are on the way.

Rece Hinds was not in the Bats' lineup on Tuesday night. Louisville's off-day on Monday, makes his absence all the more strange. Given his hot start to begin the season, it's possible that Hinds is on his way to South Beach to join the team ahead of Wednesday's showdown with the Miami Marlins.

Is Rece Hinds set to join the Reds roster?

This is purely speculation, of course. Hinds could be dealing with a minor injury, or perhaps a personal issue arose that resulted in his absence from the Bats' lineup. The more likely scenario, however, is that he's set to join the active roster.

Hinds took home International Player of the Year honors for his performance this past week. In nine games this season, he's hitting .382/.476/.853 with two doubles, a triple, and four home runs. Cincinnati's offense has only mustered 34 runs through the first 11 games of the season, and Hinds' bat could certainly help to change that.

If the Reds decided to add Hinds to the active roster, they'd need to make a corresponding move. There's no shortage of players who've struggled at the outset, but the most likely candidate to lose his spot would be Noelvi Marte. The former top prospect is 2-for-16 to begin the season and has struck out seven times in seven games.

Marte made the transition to right field last season and made a season-saving catch against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the final homestand of 2025. But he's been outplayed in the early-going, and a player like Hinds could be a better platoon partner in right field for the left-handed hitting Will Benson. Marte has historically struggled against left-handed pitching.

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall lauded Hinds' efforts during the offseason and referred to him as a "monster". He certainly put up scary numbers throughout spring training and his performance has carried over to the minor league season. Fans will find out rather quickly if Hinds is on his way back to the big leagues or just needed an extra day off.
