Rece Hinds didn't make the 2026 Cincinnati Reds' Opening Day roster and will start the season at Triple-A Louisville. Nevertheless, that shouldn't take away from the brilliance he displayed at various points this spring. In 21 games, Hinds hit a robust .410/.465/.949. A lot of his damage came in the power department, as he crushed 10 extra-base hits, including five home runs.
The Reds' newfound depth in the outfield made Hinds' inclusion on the Opening Day roster a bit superfluous. But if he can keep this torrid stretch going as he heads into the regular season, it wouldn't be a shock to see him make a triumphant return to Cincinnati at the first sign of trouble.
Rece Hinds barely missed out on the Reds' Opening Day roster
Hinds' strong effort this spring is a continuation of the breakout he had in the minor leagues last year. In between an abbreviated Major League stint, he hit .302/.359/.563 at Triple-A Louisville. Hinds has a quick bat, which leads to huge exit velocities and big power numbers when he makes contact.
But Hinds struggles with strikeouts and missed more often than he made contact when he swung the bat during his Major League stint in 2025. That needs to change if he's going to have any chance of sticking at the highest level. Hinds showed flashes during Cactus League play this spring.
His strikeout rate was just above 30% prior to being reassigned to Minor League camp and that will will no doubt be something the Reds' scouts and coaches will keep an eye on once he begins play at Triple-A Louisville. If Hinds can get that number to about 23% or less in the minors, Cincinnati will have a difficult time keeping him off the active roster.
Fans already know the kind of damage Hinds can do to a baseball — he proved that back in 2024. It's the improvements he's made (and continues to make) to his plate discipline and bat-to-ball skills that will make or break his career. While he didn't do enough to crack the Reds Opening Day roster, it's also hard to see how he could have done more.
