The Cincinnati Reds outfield always feels like a work in progress, doesn't it? Whether it's failing to develop talent in the minor leagues, attempting to transform career infielders into suitable outfielders, or shying away from free agent spending, the outfield is almost always the most overlooked aspects of the Reds' roster.
As currently constructed, the Reds' outfield features JJ Bleday, Dane Myers, Héctor Rodríguez, Noelvi Marte, Carlos Jorge, and Blake Dunn. Is it crazy to think we won't see any changes heading into next season?
The Reds 2027 outfield might look a lot like it did in 2026
Bleday and Myers did enough during their first seasons with the Reds to return next season. Both should be used as platoon hitters rather than receive everyday at-bats, but it's probably fair to assume that Bleday and Myers will be back in 2027.
The Reds have high hopes for Rodríguez, as evidenced by his early-August call-up to the big leagues. He staved off the struggles that emerged during his first couple of weeks in the big leagues, and closed out the year by hitting .264/.296/.491 over his final 29 games. When facing right-handed pitching, he posted a .252/.306/.476 slash line, but his lack of success against lefties suggests he'll need a platoon partner in 2027.
Jorge had a cup of coffee with the Reds in 2026, but he showed enough that the team is likely to give him a long look during spring training. As a left-handed bat with excellent speed and tremendous defensive acumen, he could be paired with Myers up the middle in 2027.
Marte is arguably the biggest boom-or-bust player on the entire Reds' roster. He is exceedingly gifted athletically, and has the sweetest swing on the team, but there are questions about his work ethic. However, it sounds like the team has already addressed those concerns, and he's currently getting in some extra reps in the Dominican Winter League.
Though Marte is a right-handed hitter, he has reverse splits, which makes him less appealing to pair alongside Rodríguez in right field. There's no way the Reds are going to pencil him in as a starter in 2027. Perhaps a minor-league assignment or a part-time role to begin the year seems like the most prudent route given how poorly he played last season.
The Reds have two more options to deploty in the outfield — Spencer Steer and Blake Dunn — but both are rehabbing following offseason surgery. Steer is expected to be ready in time for spring camp, but Dunn's status is a bit more up in the air. Both are right-handed hitters, and could provide a nice compliment for one of Bleday or Rodríguez next season.
The free agents options are limited, and the Reds are more likely to find a bargain than a big bat anyway. Fans might not like it, but Cincinnati's starting outfield in 2027 might look a whole lot like the one that finished the season in 2026.
