Reds make Carlos Jorge promotion official after long awaited opportunity

Reports emerged on Thursday that Cincinnati Reds outfield prospect Carlos Jorge was coming to the big leagues. The Reds officially selected Jorge's contract ahead of Friday's series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers and added him to the active roster.

But with the Reds' 40-man roster maxed out, a corresponding move needed to be made. There'd been plenty of speculation throughout Reds Country for the past 24 hours, and the team ended the drama by optioning infielder/ outfielder Ivan Johnson back to Triple-A Louisville and moving Michael Toglia from the 10-day to the 60-day IL.

Jorge is a converted infielder and has spent most of the season in center field, though he can play all three outfield spots. The 22-year-old made the jump from Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Louisville at the end of June and spent some time on the IL during the middle of August. Altogether, he's played in 88 minor-league games this season and owns a combined .308/.376/.427 slash line.

MLB Pipeline ranks Jorge just outside the team's top-15 prospects, citing his plus speed and defense along with an above-average arm as his best tools. No one is going to confuse Jorge for the recently promoted Héctor Rodríguez. Though both are diminutive outfielders, Rodríguez's upside comes in the batter's box, while Jorge's value is found in the field.

With a left-hander on the mound for the Brewers on Friday, Jorge was not in the Reds starting lineup. His OPS drops from .827 against right-handed pitchers to .697 against southpaws. With his blazing fast speed, however, Jorge could make an appearance late in the game as a pinch runner.

Jorge was Rule 5 eligible this coming offseason, and given how well he's performed this season, the Reds were likely to add him to the 40-man roster this winter anyway. Now he gets to have a cup of coffee in the big leagues before the expectations ramp up in 2027.
