Reds may be watching another future building block emerge at just the right time

It's September 1, 2026, and Cincinnati Reds fans were hoping to watch their favorite team take down the rest of their National League Central rivals during the final month of the season and win the division for the first time since 2012. Unfortunately, the Cincinnati faithful will have to wait at least one more year — and likely more than that.

The Reds' 2026 campaign has not gone according to plan. Sal Stewart, Elly De La Cruz, and Chase Burns stick out as the lone success stories in a season littered with disappointment. But a late-season surprise could help to make the team's final few weeks much more entertaining to watch.

Héctor Rodríguez emergence could be a sign of things to come for the Reds

Héctor Rodríguez made his Major League debut after this year's trade deadline. Cincinnati moved Nathaniel Lowe just before the August 3 deadline passed, and in doing so, opened up a spot in the lineup for Rodríguez.

The young outfielder got off to a slow start, which wasn't unexpected given his penchant to swing at almost any pitch that's even remotely close to the strike zone. He went just 2-for-27 during his first nine big-league games, and a number of Reds fans were beginning to wonder whether or not the lights were too bright for the team's top young talent.

But Rodríguez has turned a corner of late, and since recording his first RBI in the major leagues on August 17 against the St. Louis Cardinals, the 22-year-old has been on quite the heater. He's gone 12-for-37 in that time (.324) with four home runs and nine RBI. His 1.066 OPS and 188 wRC+ during that span suggests he's beginning to adjust to the big leagues.

Cincinnati gave Noelvi Marte countless chances to prove himself since being called up in 2023, and he's yet to grab the bull by the horns. Rodríguez — who plays the same defensive position (right field) as Marte — may've already usurped the former top prospect, and a strong finish to the 2026 season would only cement his status heading into spring training next year.

The Reds need talented young players like Rodríguez to live up to (and perhaps even exceed) their lofty potential. The outfielder was a bit of an unknown before the start of the season, but he's been on fire for the better part of two weeks, and could give the Reds' one less roster spot to worry about heading into 2027.
