The MLB trade deadline is in the rearview mirror, and the Cincinnati Reds did not subtract from the organization's well-regarded group of prospects. In fact, with the addition of Ovis Portes, the Reds front office actually added an arm to the club's farm system.
It's been a rather quiet summer for many of the Reds' top prospects. Alfredo Duno was placed on the IL, Edwin Arroyo has been out of action since spring training, and Connor Phillips is currently as the team's complex in Arizona.
But several Reds prospects have enjoyed some recent success in the minors. One such player is Cam Collier, who's been on quite the run since his appearance in the All-Star Future Game last month.
Reds prospects: Cam Collier runs on-base streak to 10 games
Collier is widely viewed by most scouts to be one of, if not the best prospect in the Reds' farm system. The former first-round pick fell into Cincinnati's lap during the 2022 MLB Draft, and while his overall numbers don't tell the whole story, the 19-year-old has certainly been swinging a hot bat of late.
Collier is riding a 10-game on-base streak (though one of those games came courtesy of a hit-by-pitch). During that span, Collier is hitting .405/.511/.676 with a wRC+ of 232 according to FanGraphs.
Reds prospects: Carlos Jorge heating up
Carlos Jorge was expected to be one of the up-and-coming young prospects in the Reds' pipeline this season. Unfortunately, Jorge has struggled at High-A this season, and on the year is hitting just .220/.286/.396 with a 31.7% walk rate.
But lately, Jorge's bat has caught fire. The 20-year-old, who's transitioning from second base to center field, is hitting .303/.415/.576 with a walk rate near 16% over his last 10 games. This is the type of production the Reds' scouts and front office are hoping to see from Jorge over the last few weeks of the 2024 season.
Reds prospects: Nick Northcutt keeps hitting HRs
The batting average is nowhere near where he'd like to see it, but Nick Northcutt is putting up eye-popping power numbers in Double-A this season. Reds fans will remember Northcutt as the player to be named later in the 2022 trade with the Boston Red Sox that sent Tommy Pham to Beantown.
This season with the Chattanooga Lookouts, Northcutt is hitting .207/.259/.490 with 23 home runs. Northcutt's 23 big flies leads, not only the team, but all of the Southern League. Miami Marlins' catching prospect Joe Mack is second on the list, but trails Northcutt by seven round-trippers.
