The Cincinnati Reds playoff odds are not good. The Redlegs will get a day off on Monday and begin a three-game with the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. Recent shakeups in the Reds rotation have kept Tuesday's starter a secret.
Over the weekend, rookie starter Julian Aguiar got his first win and Casey Kelly picked up his first major league save. Both pitchers were all that was needed during Cincinnati's 10-2 route of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.
The Reds also got a bit of good news on the injury front as well when it comes to the team's ace Hunter Greene. After receiving a second opinion on his elbow injury, it sounds as if Greene could return later this season.
Reds News: Hunter Greene avoid serious injury, could return in 2024
When it was announced earlier this month that Greene was placed on the 15-day IL with an elbow injury, the Cincinnati faithful feared the worst. A number of pitchers have endured elbow ailments this season, many of which have resulted in Tommy John surgery.
Thankfully, for Greene, he's just dealing with inflammation. Greene received an opinion from three different doctors, and every one of them claimed that he hadn't suffered UCL damage. During Sunday's broadcast of the Reds-Pirates game, Jim Day reported that Greene's injury initially occurred after the right-hander banged his elbow against a cabinet.
The prescription for Greene will be two weeks of rest to allow the swelling to go down before resumes throwing. There's a chance that Greene could return later this season to cap off what's been a stellar 2024 campaign for the third-year hurler.
Reds News: Cam Collier keeps mashing for Dayton Dragons
If you're looking for a minor league player to keep an eye on over the final few weeks of the 2024, look no further than Reds infield prospect Cam Collier. There may not be a hotter hitter in all of the minor leagues after what Collier did this past week.
Collier was 3-for-5 on Friday night with three home runs and five RBI. Collier followed up that performance by going 2-for-4 on Saturday with another homer and another run batted in. On the season, Collier has 19 round-trippers and 70 RBI. Keep in mind that Collier is just 19 years old.
Reds News: Brooks Kriske claimed by Orioles
The Cincinnati Reds needed a 40-man roster spot for newly acquired first baseman Dominic Smith last week. In order to bring the former Boston Red Sox infielder aboard, the Reds designated Brooks Kriske for assignment. The former New York Yankees prospect was added to the Reds' roster shortly before the MLB trade deadline.
According to Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Kriske was plucked off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Kriske was never called up to the big leagues during his stint with the Reds, and spent the entire 2024 season at Triple-A Louisville. The 30-year-old Kriske was 5-0 with a 3.10 ERA and 72 strikeouts in less than 50 innings pitched with the Louisville Bats this season.
