Reds News: Hunter Greene's rehab pushed back, Spencer Steer heating up, Ian Gibaut
Hunter Greene is still scheduled to return in 2024, just not as quickly as he'd hoped.
The Cincinnati Reds gave way to the Minnesota Twins during Sunday's finale at Target Field, but David Bell's bunch still won the series. The Reds wrapped up their 10-game road trip with a record of 5-5 and have just 11 games left in the 2024 season.
Whether or not this will be Bell's final two weeks in the Reds organization is not yet known. There are rumors swirling that Bell may be replaced after the season, but the Reds skipper still has two years left on the contract extension he signed last summer. This is an issue that will surely captivate the Reds' fanbase until a final decision is made.
Reds News: Hunter Greene's rehab pushed back
But in other Reds news, Cincinnati's ace won't be back as quickly as originally expected. Hunter Greene has been sidelined with an elbow injury, but the All-Star starter is angling to return to the rotation before the end of the season.
Greene was scheduled to throw a simulated game in Minnesota this weekend, but a scheduling conflict forced the Reds to reschedule that event for Tuesday. Greene is expected to throw 50 pitches, and if all goes well, the right-hander may be able to return for the final homestand of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Reds News: Spencer Steer heating up
Spencer Steer got a chance to exact some revenge against this former organization over the weekend. Steer was originally drafted by the Twins, but came to Cincinnati a little over two years ago when the Reds traded starter Tyler Mahle to Minnesota. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and minor league pitcher Steve Hajjar were also part of the deal.
Steer started out the 2024 season on a bit of a hot streak, but the second-year player hit a wall a few months back. Steer began the season hitting .252/.367/.430. But since May 1st, Steer's slash line has been just .227/.315/.410.
But during the series against the Twins, Steer was 4-for-13 with four runs scored and all four hits going for extra bases. Steer has been one of Bell's most versatile players, but the Reds would love to see more consistency from 26-year-old over the final two weeks of the 2024 season.
Reds News: Ian Gibaut begins rehab assignment
Will the Reds finally get to see Ian Gibaut back in the bullpen before the 2024 season is up? Based on the latest news coming out of the Reds front office, the answer would be, yes. Gibaut was sent on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Louisville following a lengthy absence from the Reds' active roster, including two setbacks as the right-hander tries to return from the injured list.
Gibaut saw action on Sunday for the Louisville Bats and went one inning and allowed one run on two hits. That lone run came courtesy of the long ball. Gibaut has been on the IL since the season began due to several injuries, including a right forearm strain and a calf strain.
