The Cincinnati Reds are rumored to be in the market for an outfield prospect. It just so happens the Arizona Diamondbacks have a plethora of outfielders and may be looking to unload one or two prior to the start of the 2023 season.
The Reds outfield was once the strength of the team. Heading into the 2020 season, Nick Castellanos, Jesse Winker, Nick Senzel, Shogo Akiyama, and Tyler Naquin were all part of Cincinnati's outfield. Heading into next season, Senzel is the only player still on the Reds roster.
After non-tendering Aristides Aquino just a few weeks ago, Senzel the longest tenured outfielder on the Reds roster and has yet to eclipse 110 games played in a season. With the D-backs shopping some of their young outfielders, perhaps the two teams could come to an agreement.
D-backs outfield prospect Dominic Fletcher could be very appealing to the Reds.
A lot of Cincinnati Reds fans are salivating over the potential opportunity for general manager Nick Krall to land a player like Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy. While both are talented players and an upgrade over almost outfielder currently on Cincinnati's roster, Dominic Fletcher could be a target for the Reds as well.
Fletcher was a second-round pick out of the University of Arkansas in 2019 and made his way to Triple-A Reno in 2022. In 101 games for the Aces, Fletcher slashed .301/.368/.452 with 42 extra-base hits, including five triples.
Fletcher is currently ranked as the 13th-best prospect in the D-backs farm system according to MLB Pipeline. The outlet gives Fletcher very high marks for his defensive tools and he's considered an above-average hitter. Fletcher isn't necessarily known for his power, but has posted double-digit home runs in his first two full minor league seasons.
While major league contributors like Thomas, McCarthy, and Daulton Varsho are likely to draw a lot of trade interest, keep a close watch on Dominic Fletcher. Center field has been a veritable black hole since Billy Hamilton left in 2018. Perhaps adding a player like Fletcher will help fill that void.
