The Cincinnati Reds have an interesting history with the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award. The golden era of the Big Red Machine mostly missed the boat as the award was not created until 1980, and in more modern times, one of the best hitters in not only Reds history, but MLB history, Joey Votto, was completely shut out from the honor throughout his illustrious career.
All this is to say that when it comes to Cincinnati, there are no guarantees when it comes to the award. This year, the Reds have a couple of prime Silver Slugger candidates despite an underwhelming offensive performance overall.
Elly De La Cruz should be the frontrunner to be the NL shortstop selection, thanks to his dominant production, but CJ Abrams has drawn a lot of attention this year and is on the verge of securing a 30-30 campaign, and Otto Lopez could sneak into the conversation if he catches Luis Arraez for the NL batting crown.
Meanwhile, Sal Stewart has an outside shot at the first base Silver Slugger, but the field there is much more crowded than it is at shortstop.
But what about the next wave of Reds' cornerstones? We've seen some youngsters show out this year, but of all of Cincy's prospects, the next youngster destined to win a Silver Slugger is Alfredo Duno.
Reds top prospect Alfredo Duno is as close to they come as a future Silver Slugger lock
When it comes to 20-year-old prospects, there is no such thing as a guarantee. With that in mind, though, Duno is a special bat that makes it feel as if his offensive dominance at the MLB level is inevitable.

The young catcher is MLB Pipeline's No. 21 prospect and has passed every test thrown his way since his first pro season in 2023. Signed for $3.1 million out of Venezuela, he dominated the DSL with a .945 OPS as a 17-year-old. After missing much of 2024 due to injury, he bounced back at Daytona in 2025 with a .948 OPS.
That led to his most encouraging performance yet this season. Duno began the year in Dayton and hit .260/.390/.512 with 16 homers over 65 games. He was selected for the midseason Futures Game where he was recognized for his elite bat speed.
What truly locks in Duno's future as a future Silver Slugger winner is how he's handled the jump from High-A to Double-A after being promoted to Chattanooga at the end of June. High-A to Double-A is the biggest leap in the minors and is truly what separates the men from the boys.
The Miranda, Venezuela native is nearly four years younger than his average competition in Double-A, but his performance at Chattanooga has arguably been better than what he put forth at Dayton.
Over 32 games, Duno has slashed .322/.406/.488 with three homers. Most impressive of all, he cut his strikeout rate from 26.8% at Dayton to 16.7% at Chattanooga, despite arriving at a level where young pitchers are finally starting to learn pitch sequencing and have more developed secondary offerings. A development like that bodes well for his future.
The single greatest factor that could impact Duno's future Silver Slugger hopes is whether or not his big body can remain behind the plate. He has a cannon for an arm and is more athletic than his 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame suggests, although he's still rough around the edges defensively.
Many catcher situations around the league are timeshare arrangements, due in part to the dearth of offensive talent at the position. Around the majors, only 20 catchers have logged 350 plate appearances so far this season, and the average wRC+ among that 20-player sample is 101.7.
If Duno is the special bat that we believe him to be, he'll receive much more than 350 plate appearances, health permitting, and should come in well above that low bar. If he's forced to a corner infield spot, the influx of sluggers will make the path more difficult.
Still, this is a player with elite bat speed, strike zone recognition beyond his years, and incredible raw power. The future is incredibly bright, and it's a near-guarantee that Silver Slugger hardware is in his future.
