Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Andrew Abbott is having a phenomenal season. The southpaw went to his first All-Star Game this year, and it can be argued by some that he's stolen the title of team ace from Hunter Greene — though Greene's 12-strikeout performance against the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week bodes well for him to keep that moniker.
Nevertheless, Abbott's name is nowhere to be seen in the latest NL Cy Young odds. ESPN's 2025 MLB odds tracker lists Pittsburgh Pirates starter Paul Skenes as the favorite (-450) to take home the trophy — which should come as no surprise — and Philadelphia Phillies hurler Christopher Sanchez (+325) comes in a distant second.
But after that, Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd is receiving 20-1 odds to win the Cy Young and Zack Wheeler — who's now on the injured list — is going off at 25-1. The fact that Abbott is not even being discussed among the top-4 is absolutely ludicrous.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott should be alongside Paul Skenes and Christopher Sanchez in the NL Cy Young voting
Abbott got off to a slow start after beginning the season on the IL, but the Reds left-hander is up to 22 starts on the season heading into Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. So while the counting stats like strikeouts and innings pitched might reveal a slight disparity, Abbott is right in line with the other top starters in several other categories.
Only Skenes (2.16) has a lower ERA than Abbott (2.28) among all National League starting pitchers. Both Sanchez (2.46) and Boyd (2.61) are in the top-5 as well. Wheeler actually leads the way with 195 strikeouts, followed by Logan Webb, Skenes, and Dylan Cease. But despite Boyd logging three more starts than Abbott and an additional 18 innings, he only has 17 more punch outs than the Reds' lefty.
Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is always a stat that gains tremendous traction nowadays, and Abbott's 5.3 bWAR is lightyears ahead of Boyd's 3.2 bWAR. FanGraphs actually gives a slight edge to Boyd (3.4 fWAR), but again, Abbott (3.2 fWAR) has pitched in three fewers games than Boyd.
Statcast offers a statistic called Run Value, which is an outcome based number that measures a player's overall value. Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal leads the way with a run value of 45. Abbott ranks 13th among all pitchers and sixth among all NL starters with a run value of 23, which is still higher than Boyd's 21.
In short, Abbott deserves to be discussed among the very best pitchers in the National League this season, and the fact that he's universally disregarded is outright shameful. While Skenes is likely to be the unanimous winner of the 2025 NL Cy Young Award, Abbott deserves to be a finalist.
