The 2025 MLB Draft order is set. On Tuesday night, as part of the Winter Meetings, Major League Baseball held its third annual Draft Lottery and the Washington Nationals were the ultimate winners and now own the first overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.
The Cincinnati Reds, who had a 3.7% chance to grab the No. 1 pick, ended up with the 9th overall in the 2025 MLB Draft which will be held during the All-Star festivities in Atlanta. Last year, the Reds had the No. 2 overall pick and took Wake Forest pitcher Chase Burns.
Last time Reds Picked No. 9 overall & recent First Round Picks
The last time the Reds had the No. 9 overall pick, Cincinnati selected C.J. Nitkowski in the 1994 MLB Draft. The left-hander out of St. John's University made his big league debut in 1995 and was eventually traded as part of a package to acquire David Wells from the Detroit Tigers.
In addition to Burns in 2024, the Reds have had a slew of former first-round picks become top prospects and even make their major league debuts in recent years. The Reds took Tyler Stephenson in 2015 and he's now the team's starting backstop heading into next season.
The Reds have since parted ways with former first-round picks Nick Senzel (2016) and Jonathan India (2019), but Hunter Greene (2017), Nick Lodolo (2019), Matt McLain (2021), and Rhett Lowder (2023) are all part of the 40-man roster. Both Austin Hendrick (2020) and Cam Collier (2022) are still with the organization as well.
Travis Bazanna went No. 1 overall last year, and the top pick in next year's draft is likely to be Ethan Holliday. The younger brother of Baltimore Orioles' top prospect Jackson Holliday, Ethan is the top high school bat in the nation heading into the upcoming season. Of course, former Reds' nemesis Matt Holliday is the father of both Holliday brothers.
Some names for Reds fans to watch when the draft rolls around next July could be infielder Avia Arquette (Oregon), outfielder Brendan Summerhill (Arizona), and catcher Luke Stevenson (North Carolina).
