Will the Cincinnati Reds finally make a splash at the MLB trade deadline? The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal (subscription required) believes they will. According to the MLB insider, the Reds are targeting a middle-of-the-order bat and bullpen help.
Per Rosenthal, one rival executive believes Cincinnati should be aggressive at the trade deadline. Whether or not that actually happens, however, is another story entirely. Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall is oftentimes extremely conservative at this time of year, but perhaps Cincinnati's playoff chances have the organization's top exec thinking big ahead of the July 31 deadline.
Both Krall and Reds GM Brad Meador have spoken about the Reds desire to to avoid trading away some of their top talent. Cincinnati's farm system, however, is quite deep and that could allow the Reds front office to make multiple moves before next Thursday's deadline.
Latest Reds rumors will have fans dreaming big as trade deadline nears
The Reds have been linked to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, and he definitely qualifies as a middle-of-the-order bat. Suárez has surpassed 35 big flies on the season, and while his price tag is said to be rather high, the Reds have the assets to make that type of deal work.
The Reds have yet to be connected to a specific reliever, but there are plenty available at this year's trade deadline. Cincinnati's relief corps has done an admirable job of keeping the team in games throughout the 2025 season, but reinforcements will be needed in order for the Reds to make a postseason push during the second-half.
The Reds are essentially in a three-horse race for the final NL Wild Card spot. While the NL Central isn't necessarily out of reach, the Reds trail both the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs by more than five games. But Cincinnati is locked in a tight battle with the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres for that third Wild Card spot.
The Reds' play of late has put pressure on the front office to fortify the roster ahead of the MLB trade deadline. These latest Reds rumors seem to indicate that Krall and Co. are paying attention.
