Nick Krall may have just crushed Reds fans’ Eugenio Suárez trade hopes

Making a deal will be difficult with this attitude.

Cincinnati Reds fans are constantly refreshing their social media feeds and scouring the news wire hoping for any semblance of trade tidbits with the July 31 deadline approaching. Cincinnati has been closely linked to former third baseman Eugenio Suárez, and there's a great hope throughout Reds Country that Geno could return to the Queen City at the MLB trade deadline.

Unfortunately, Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall just threw some cold water on the potential for a reunion. Speaking to The Athletic (subscription required), Krall told C. Trent Rosecrans, "You don’t want to trade your organizational depth starters because you might need them. They’re going to be extremely important to pitch a game or two when it comes down the stretch."

Some Reds fans are surely asking, how could this stance affect Cincinnati's ability to pull off a trade for Suárez? Because Geno's current team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, are seeking young, controllable pitching at this year's trade deadline.

Krall is not inherently wrong in his assertion that Cincinnati needs as much pitching depth as they can get. The Reds have already lost Brandon Williamson and Julian Aguiar for the year, and it's quite possible that Carson Spiers could be out for the rest of the year as well. The Reds have been without Hunter Greene for a good portion of the season, but are hopeful the flamethrower will return to the rotation sometime next month.

While the Reds may have a tremendous amount of depth among their group of starters, if Krall and the front office are unwilling to offload some of organization's young hurlers, then the D-backs are likely to look elsewhere if they decide to trade Suárez at the deadline.

The Reds' brass is correct in keeping players like Chase Burns and Rhett Lowder out of trade talks — both prospects have already shown flashes and are under team control until the next decade. Chase Petty represents a young pitcher who could be moved, but at just 22 years old, there's an unlimited amount of untapped potential remaining. While Petty's underperformed this season, the Reds may be unwilling to move the former first-round pick for a rental like Suárez.

Not only is Cincinnati's stance on their pitching depth an obstacle, but the Seattle Mariners are making a strong pitch to reunite with Suárez as well. Seattle already traded for D-backs first baseman Josh Naylor earlier this week, but are said to still be in the hunt for Suárez too. The Mariners have a strong farm system, headlined by eight players among the top-100 according to MLB Pipeline.

With Krall's desire to hold onto the organization's pitching depth and the Mariners abundance of prospect riches, the idea of reuniting with Suárez may be slowly fading.
