According to The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans, there is mutual interest between the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks involving a trade for Eugenio Suárez. The former Reds third baseman is arguably the hottest name available at this year's MLB trade deadline, and Cincinnati would certainly welcome Suárez back with open arms.
The Reds traded Suárez prior to the start of the 2022. Suárez and former outfielder Jesse Winker were shipped to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a trade package that included Connor Phillips, Jake Fraley, and Brandon Williamson.
Suárez was then dealt to the D-backs prior to last season and is in the final year of the contract extension he originally signed with the Reds. Suárez has been mashing all season, and has caught fire following the All-Star break. Geno is hitting .254/.325/.598 with a league-leading 36 home runs. The chances are good that number would go up quite a bit if Suárez played half his games at Great American Ball Park over the final two months of the season.
Reds Rumors: Cincy targets reunion with Diamondbacks 3B Eugenio Suárez at MLB trade deadline
The buildup of a potential Suárez trade to the Reds has been building. At first, the idea seemed a bit foolish due to the presence of Noelvi Marte at third base. However, a recent development has rendered that problem insignificant.
The Reds have recently deployed Marte in the outfield. A longtime infielder, Marte made his first start in right field last weekend at Citi Field against the New York Mets. Though Cincinnati has been rumored to be targeting outfielder at this year's deadline, moving Marte to right field would open up a full-time spot at third base for Suárez. Additionally, it clears the way for Sal Stewart to take over at the hot corner in 2026.
The question now becomes, which Reds prospects are the D-backs looking to receive in return. Arizona has been targeting starting pitching, meaning the Reds may have to sacrifice top pitching prospect Chase Petty. It's unlikely that Petty alone would be enough to secure Suárez's services, but it's a start.
With the wheels in motion and the Reds in need of an extra bat, this trade could move forward rather quickly. Cincinnati is not the only team involved in trade talks for Suárez, but they may have the most to offer in terms of prospect capital. Will Nick Krall and Reds front office finally pull the trigger and pull off a blockbuster trade at the deadline?
