Dodgers roster move has Reds fans excited for former hated closer to ruin LA's plans

Back in late May, the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers worked out a stunning trade nobody saw coming. Former All-Star closer Alexis Díaz was sent to LA after Cincy had enough with his struggles.

Díaz was demoted to Triple-A and then couldn't get it together after 14 games in the minors. Well, it's been the same story in LA for the right-hander. After six games and a 9.64 ERA, Díaz has very much not recovered. But that hasn't changed the Dodgers' stance.

On Tuesday, LA called up the former Reds closer to join the MLB roster as they continue to deal with injuries to their pitching staff. It appears as if they will use the next few weeks to gauge if Díaz will be suitable in their big league bullpen before they have to make further moves at the trade deadline.

Reds fans will be the first to tell Dodgers fans that won't happen, though. Díaz has been viewed as unfixable for a while, and if an up-and-coming small market team wasn't willing to wait it out any longer, that probably means it was the end of the road.

Díaz spent about three weeks with the Dodgers before making his debut at Triple-A. After three straight scoreless outings, the 2023 All-Star has gotten shelled to the tune of five earned runs on five hits and five walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work. For whatever reason, the Dodgers figured the time was now to make the call.

Reds fans would love nothing more than to watch Díaz further derail the Dodgers' pitching staff, which is already in a precarious situation. LA has just lost four games in a row and surrendered 38 runs over that span.

Ah, yes, it makes more sense now. Díaz is being called up as a necessity because the Dodgers have had to further burn through their pitching staff amid their struggles. That won't help guarantee a soft landing for the right-hander, who already had that exact luxury being out of the spotlight in Cincinnati.

So much for Díaz being "happy" about the trade to LA. He might get a heavy dose of reality, especially with how unforgiving the Dodgers' fanbase is.
