The Cincinnati Reds experienced a rash of injuries in 2026, especially to the pitching staff. Outside of Brady Singer, Andrew Abbott, and Brock Burke, every Reds pitcher spent time on the injured list last season.
The Reds' position players were not immune to injury either. Elly De La Cruz landed on the IL for the first time in his career and missed three weeks last June. Jose Trevino endured two separate stints on the IL last season, and Spencer Steer's season came to a screeching halt just before the calendar flipped to August.
Some of those ailments, unfortunately, have carried over into the offseason. Let's dive into the complete list of Reds players who are still nursing injuries. What is their status heading into the winter months?
Injured Reds players and their status heading into the 2026-27 offseason
Tony Santillan, Reds pitcher (hip)
Tony Santillan wound up on the IL twice last season. His first trip came in late-June after he was diagnosed with an oblque strain, but it was the left hip labral tear in September that ended his 2026 campaign.
Santillan was scheduled to be on crutches following the surgery, and while he's expected to return sometime in 2027, no definitive timeline has been given. Santillan shouldered quite the workload in 2025, but was unable to do the same in 2026. The Reds will likely take things slowly with the hulking right-hander once he's finally able to return to the mound.
Julian Garcia, Reds pitcher (elbow)
Julian Garcia was a breath of fresh air for the Reds midway through the 2026 season. The right-hander was a late-bloomer of sorts, making his MLB debut at the age of 31, but he proved to be one of Terry Francona's most reliable arms as the season moved along.
Unfortunately, Garcia suffered an elbow injury in September — the same one that sidelined Hunter Greene for three months this past summer. The good news, however, is that he should be fully recovered by the time spring training rolls around.
Spencer Steer, Reds utility player (wrist)
Spencer Steer suffered a wrist injury at the end of July, and, unfortunately, his rehab efforts fell short. Steer was unable to return to the active roster, and underwent surgery last month. But, he's expected to be back on the field when spring training begins in 2027.
Wrist injuries are tricky, however. It can take some players more than a year to fully recover. The Reds will certainly be hoping that Steer can bounce back rather quickly. Cincinnati not only missed his defensive versatility, but his bat as well. Despite playing in just 98 games, he was still fifth on the team in home runs (16) last season.
Blake Dunn, Reds outfielder (elbow)
While Santillan, Garcia, and Steer are all expected to return in 2027, the jury is still on Blake Dunn. The outfielder suffered an elbow injury midway through the 2026 season, and underwent two separate surgeries.
Dunn underwent Tommy John surgery in August, but then had to have a second operation — an ulnar nerve transposition — last month. Though the second procedure isn't expected to extend Dunn's original timeline, fans shouldn't expect to see him back onto the field until at least sometime closer to the All-Star break.
Hunter Greene, Reds pitcher (elbow)
The biggest blow to the Reds' 2027 season was announced back in August. Hunter Greene, who was sidelined for three months after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure this past spring, suffered a torn UCL in August and will miss all of next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Without Greene, the Reds have a gaping hole in the middle of their rotation. While it's fair to argue that Chase Burns has laid claim to the role of Cincinnati's ace, there's no denying the talent that resides in Greene's right arm. Replacing his production next season will be no easy task.
