Following a delightful Thanksgiving meal topped off with a slice of homemade pumpkin pie, it's time for some Black Friday shopping. Whether you wake up at the crack of dawn to hit the mall or prefer to shop online from the comfort of your own home, nearly everyone will be looking for bargains and deals to surprise their loved ones this Christmas.
The Athletic (subscription required) recently published their version of a Black Friday free-agent deal for every MLB team. While the Cincinnati Reds weren't stuck with a lump of coal, this year's Black Friday shopping spree resulted in the same ole, same ole.
The Athletic predicts a reunion with Emilio Pagán this Christmas — something that Reds fans wouldn't outright reject, but accept with a somber tone. Cincinnati definitely needs to restock the bullpen this offseason, but finding a big-time bat to slot in the middle of the lineup is equally as important.
Re-signing Emilio Pagán can't be the Reds' only focus this holiday season
Pagán had a terrific bounce-back season in 2025. After injuries limited his effectiveness in 2024, Pagán became the Reds' closer last season and recorded a career-best 32 saves in 70 appearances out of the bullpen. The veteran logged 68⅔ innings in 2025 and posted an impressive 2.88 ERA. It was arguably his best performance since 2019 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pagán has voiced his desire to return to Cincinnati, and with a number of vacancies in the Reds bullpen, a reunion is not out of the question. Many experts and pundits predict Pagán could sign a contract similar to the two-year, $16 million deal he inked with Cincy back in December of 2023.
Reds fans, however, are looking for the front office to make a splash this offseason. While it may be pie-in-the-sky thinking to assume the Reds have the resources to wrestle Kyle Schwarber away from the big-market spenders, the Cincinnati faithful have their hearts set on a homecoming this winter.
But while Reds fans are hoping to see a brand-new Lexus topped with a giant red ribbon parked in the driveway this holiday season, they may want to brace themselves for disappointment. It looks like all uncle Bob (Castellini) will be able to afford this Christmas is another pair of socks.
