Try as they might, the Cincinnati Reds have been unable to quell the trade rumors surrounding starting pitcher Hunter Greene. While many Reds fans want to dismiss these rumors as pure and utter nonsense, the hearsay and gossip is likely to trickle into the offseason and could gain steam very quickly.
If the Reds actually do the unthinkable and look to trade Greene this winter, there'll be no shortage of potential suitors. But not every franchise will be able to cobble together the type of trade package necessary to pry Greene away from Cincinnati.
There are a few frontrunners, however, whose stockpile of prospects and Major League assets could potentially sway Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall to pull the trigger on a blockbuster trade this offseason.
3 surprising landing spots if the Reds really dare to trade Hunter Greene
Boston Red Sox
The one team that's been bandied about since these trade rumors began to gain traction is the Boston Red Sox. Alex Cora's club made it back to the MLB playoffs this season, but a frontline starter like Greene would help them take that next step and become true World Series contenders in 2026.
The Red Sox have something the Reds need; an abundance of outfielders. Boston will be unwilling to move Roman Anthony, but one of Wilyer Abreu or Jarren Duran could headline a trade package that would help Cincinnati fill one the biggest holes on their roster.
Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles have made no bones about it when it comes to their top priority this offseason — they're targeting a top-of-the-rotation starter to pair with Trevor Rogers. After watching Corbin Burnes flee to the Arizona Diamondbacks this past winter, Baltimore endured a down-year in 2025 and finished in the AL East basement.
But the O's have a lot of young, controllable talent on the roster, and their farm system is chock full of elite prospects. No team may be more desperate to secure an ace-caliber pitcher like Greene on a bargain contract, and Baltimore's potential offer could be too enticing for Cincinnati to pass up.
Detroit Tigers
One of the dark horses in this potential pursuit of Greene could be the Detroit Tigers. After entering the All-Star break as one of the best teams in the league, Detroit faltered down the stretch, and though they made it past the Wild Card round, the Tigers ultimately lost in the ALDS to the Seattle Mariners.
The Tigers have one of the best pitchers in the game in Tarik Skubal, and would undoubtedly love to add Greene to the rotation in order to form one of the most lethal 1-2 punches in all of baseball. Detroit has some top-shelf talent in the minors, and could be persuaded to part with one of their corner outfielders in order to seal the deal.
