Cincinnati Reds: Another series win, Sal Romano finishes strong and more
Good morning and welcome to a Wednesday edition of Blog Red Machine’s news and notes. The Cincinnati Reds grabbed another series win, Sal Romano shakes off a rough start and more.
The Cincinnati Reds close out their 3-game series against their in-state rival, the Cleveland Indians, on Wednesday night. After that, it’s a 3-game stint with the St. Louis Cardinals before heading into the All-Star Break. Let’s take a look at some recent news and notes regarding your Cincinnati Reds.
Another series win. I hope every Reds fan stayed up late enough to see Cincinnati overcome a 4-run, 9th inning deficit last night. The Reds brought 11 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning to defeat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 last night.
Joey Votto came up C-L-U-T-C-H when it counted the most. With the Reds trailing 3-4, Votto came to the plate with the bases loaded and 2 outs. After fouling off what would’ve been ball four, allowing the tying run to cross home plate, Votto stepped back into the batters’ box with the count full.

Joey delivered a bases-clearing double to the gap in right-center field, scoring Jose Peraza, Scott Schebler, and Dilson Hererra. Votto would eventually score on a hit by Eugenio Suarez to give the Reds a 7-4 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Raisel Iglesias slammed the door on the Indians for his 19th save of the season. With back-to-back wins over the Indians, the Reds secured yet another series win.
Over the past 7 series the Reds have played, they’re now 5-1-1 going back to their 2-game set against the Detroit Tigers which began on June 19th. The Reds are 15-6 during that span. They could easily have gotten a series-win during their previous 3-game stint with the Chicago Cubs.
Sal Romano rebounds after a rough start. It’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish. At least that’s what Sal Romano has to be thinking following his performance on Tuesday night. The young right-hander went 7.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 of them earned) on 5 hits.
Romano’s evening did not start out how he planned after allowing a lead-off homer to Francisco Lindor. Two batters later, Jose Ramirez went yard as well, and just like that, the Reds were down 0-2. An error by Suarez in the second inning allowed Jason Kipnis to score, then Tyler Naquin scored on a fielder’s choice, increasing the Indians lead to 4 runs.
Big Sal settled in after that and retired 17 of the next 18 batters that came to the plate. His only misstep was a walk to Kipnis in the bottom the seventh. Kyle Crockett came on in the bottom of the eighth after the Indians got two runners aboard.
Herrera starts. Dilson Herrera got his first start of the season for the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. He started at second base in place of Scooter Gennett who was the designated hitter.

Herrera went 0-for-3, but reached base twice, drawing a walk in both the 6th and 9th inning. Herrera’s at-bat in the ninth inning was after an intentional walk to Scott Schebler. It allowed Joey Votto to get to the plate and drive in the winning runs.
