Now that we’ve entered the month of July, Reds rumors will be coming fast in furious in the coming weeks, as potential trades will no doubt be proposed. Scooter Gennett is the latest member of the Cincinnati Reds to see his name pop up in a trade rumor.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, Gennett is being looked at by the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they look to upgrade their infield. The Dodgers have also apparently had conversations with the Twins about Brian Dozier and the Mets about Asdrubal Cabrera.

Gennett offers something the other two don’t; team control through 2020. Gennett is arbitration-eligible this offseason, while both Dozier and Cabrera are free agents at the end of the 2019 season.

The Dodgers lost shortstop Corey Seager for the season with a UCL sprain. Seager will require Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers are looking to add infield depth. Logan Forsythe could find his way to the bench. Forsythe has started 32 games at second base this season but is currently batting .202 with an on-base percentage of .260.

Max Muncy has spent some time at second base this season but has been primarily at first and third base. If the Dodgers were to land Gennett in a trade, Muncy would probably head to the outfield. Cody Bellinger (first base) and Justin Turner (third base) aren’t going anywhere, so a move to the outfield for Muncy would be the most likely.

Reds fans might as well get used to the talk of Scooter getting traded. I know it’s not the most popular topic, but if you’re someone who wants to see Gennett stay and receive a contract extension, then Nick Senzel will have to be moved. With the odds of that being quite slim, the question becomes what can the Reds get in return.

What could the Reds get in return from LA?

I think most Reds fans would agree that starting pitching is the most glaring need for Cincinnati going forward. If the Reds were to trade Gennett, you’d have to think a Top-100 prospect would be a must in return.

Would the Dodgers be willing to part with right-hander Mitchell White? White is ranked the No. 3 prospect in the Dodgers’ farm system and No. 83 overall. He was a second-round pick of the Dodgers in 2016 and is currently at Double-A Tulsa.

Right-handers Dennis Santana and Yadier Alvarez could also be options for Cincinnati if they’re looking for pitching. However, the Dodgers have two talented outfield prospects that the Reds would love to get their hands on. Alex Verdugo or Yusniel Diaz would be great additions for Cincinnati.
