In the first of what are likely to be many Reds rumors as the trade deadline approaches, Raisel Iglesias is said to be on the Houston Astros’ radar.

Rumors surrounding potential trades will start flying fast and furious now that we’ve entered July. The non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. When it comes to Reds rumors, relief pitcher Raisel Iglesias appears to be the first player mentioned, and it’s the Houston Astros that appear to be interested.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that the Houston Astros have been scouting Iglesias in an effort to boost their bullpen.

That should come as no surprise, as Iglesias has been one of the best relievers in baseball over the last few years. Last season, Iglesias had 92 strikeouts, 28 saves and a 2.49 ERA, the lowest of his career.

So far this season, Iglesias has 39 strikeouts and a 2.52 ERA. In his last 6 save opportunities, Iglesias is a perfect 6-for-6 with a 1.35 ERA.

It’s no wonder that the Astros or any other contending team for that matter would be interested trading for Raisel Iglesias. Iglesias’ fastball is in the mid-90’s and can reach the upper-90’s from time to time.

Iglesias was at one time predicted to be a big part of the starting rotation in Cincinnati, but shoulder issues forced the Reds the rethink how they’d utilize the young Cuban sensation. He became a reliever for the Reds in 2016.

One of the biggest benefits of keeping Iglesias is his contract. The right-hander is signed through the 2020 season, and the club has an additional year of arbitration control. The entire value of the original 7-year contract was $27 million, which is quite a bargain considering how well Iglesias has played.

With a contract like that, Cincinnati could command a pretty good haul for Iglesias’ services. Kyle Tucker, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft and the Astros’ top prospect might be a steep asking price, but one the Reds should definitely inquire about if the opportunity arises.

One reason the Reds might consider trading Iglesias is the fact that he’s occupying a position that the Reds don’t need to value very high right now. A great closer is necessary on a contending ball club, but it’s a luxury for a rebuilding franchise like the Reds.
