Cincinnati Reds Rumors – Zack Cozart gets less valuable everyday
The Cincinnati Reds continue to sit on their two most tradable assets in shortstop Zack Cozart and reliever Drew Storen.
When July came to an end, the Cincinnati Reds’ most tradable asset was on the DL. Zack Cozart has had quad issues on and off all season long. When he has been healthy, he has been great this season.
Cozart made his first All-Star Game this season, winning the vote. He has been at or near the top of OBP and batting average for shortstops all season long. He has also played his usual plus defense.
Yet, he is still on the Reds. The Reds have already announced that Jose Peraza will be given a chance to prove himself next year. The Reds also have Blake Trahan who may only be a season away from making it to the big leagues as a shortstop.
Meanwhile, the market for Cozart gets smaller by the day. The Milwaukee Brewers wanted a defensive first back-up for second and third. They had to settle on defensively questionable infielder Neil Walker. This happened after the Cleveland Indians traded for Jay Bruce, ending the chance that Cozart was headed to Cleveland.

The Reds have also seen Dustin Pedroia come on and off the the DL even more times than Cozart. The Red Sox were in on Cozart before they acquired Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants. They could get back in, if Nunez is forced to play second base with Pedroia injured.

So the Cincinnati Reds continue to sit on Zack Cozart and Drew Storen despite other teams’ needs for infield and relief help.
The Reds need to get rid of Cozart and Drew Storen right now. They are paying their salaries and watching the veterans eat up opportunities for younger players. Jose Peraza should be starting at shortstop everyday.
Storen, meanwhile, is holding down a spot in the bullpen. The Reds need to see as much of the young players as possible.
The bullpen has been good enough that the Reds need to figure out where the younger pitchers are going to fit in next season.
The first thing that the Reds need to do is to get revocable waivers on the duo. If a team wants either one that team will make a claim. If not, the entire MLB world is open as an option.

Whatever the Reds think they want for the duo, they need to make the deal before it is too late. Storen’s value is approaching zero. Cozart’s, meanwhile, has nowhere to go but down.
