This unheralded Reds prospect is living up to his name in the best way possible

You've got a friend in me.

Everyone loves a friendly greeting, and Cincinnati Reds prospect Jacob Friend's charming early-season performance is sure to quickly win over the hearts and minds of the fanbase. Friend was recently promoted to High-A Dayton, and he's already making new friends after a fantastic first week with the Dragons.

Friend quickly showed the Reds' brass that he had little need to keep embarrassing opposing pitchers in the Florida State League. During his first 42 games with the Daytona Tortugas earlier this season, he hit .307/.433/.587 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, eight stolen bases, and a 168 wRC+.

That showing earned him a bump to High-A Dayton, and through seven games, he's already showing that he may not be long for that level of competition either. Friend owns a .320/.393/.600 slash line with a pair of homers, three RBI, and a 146 wRC+ after just one week in Dayton.

Friend has a unique skillset that's sure to intrigue the Reds' fanbase. He can play three different positions; left field, first base, and catcher. In fact, he's most comfortable donning the tools of ignorance and squatting behind the dish.

Friend has made 20 starts at catcher this season, along with eight at first base and 12 in left field. With Alfredo Duno on the Dayton Dragons roster, Friend's time behind the plate might be a bit more infrequent until the Reds top prospect is moved up to Double-A.

Reds prospect Jacob Friend could follow in Blake Dunn's footsteps

Friend was a sixth-round draft pick of the Reds back in 2024 after spending his collegiate career at Davidson College. He didn't make his pro debut until 2025 and spent the season split between the Arizona Complex League and Low-A Daytona. Altogether, Friend posted a .179/.413/.321 slash line with five round-trippers, 19 RBI, and a 123 wRC+. He's certainly shown improvement this season.

It would be quite presumptuous to assume that Friend will soon be on his way to the major leagues. Numerous unranked prospects have shown flashes in the past and quickly fade away once they're elevated to upper levels of the minor leagues. But Blake Dunn's recent exploits at the big-league level can certainly give Friend a goal to shoot for.

Dunn was the Reds' 15th-round pick a few years ago and after a successful stint in the minor leagues, he's turned himself into an indispensable member of this year's ball club. If Friend remains patient (and diligent) perhaps he'll soon realize his boyhood dream too.
