Tyler Stephenson's emotional interview makes Reds trade fate hard to ignore

Tyler Stephenson was the star of Sunday's series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The most tenured member of the Cincinnati Reds roster, Stephenson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. His round-tripper came during what could be his final at-bat in a Reds uniform.

Stephenson stuck around after the game to give an on-field interview will RedsTV host Jim Day, and it was obvious that he was feeling the emotions of the moment. With the trade deadline looming, Day asked the question that was on everybody's mind.

Speaking about Stephenson's home run, Day cited the poetic nature of the moment. His first ever at-bat as a Red in 2020 resulted in a homer. The longtime Reds broadcaster asked Stephenson what he felt as he was rounding the bases, and he was understandably emotional.

"It was pretty special," Stephenson said through tears. "I don't know. There's a lot going on."

Day quickly jumped in to comfort the Reds' backstop, gave a bit of encouragement, wrapped up the segment, and allowed him to rejoin his teammates in the clubhouse. Before he left, Day said, "You're a good man. You're a pro's pro. And it's been a pleasure to be around you every day."

It's quite likely that Nick Krall, Brad Meador, and members of the Reds front office staff have already informed Stephenson that he's likely to be traded ahead of Monday's deadline. With a need for bat-first catchers among playoff contenders, he's arguably one of the most valuable trade chips on the Reds roster. The Reds have until 6 p.m. ET on Monday to finalize any deals they have in place.

Stephenson broke into the league with the Reds in 2020 after being drafted in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He looked to be a franchise cornerstone after gaining regular reps in 2021, and was ready to take off in 2022. But a shoulder injury derailed all that momentum and limited Stephenson to just 50 games that season.

Stephenson's 2023 campaign was a disappointing one, but he bounced back in 2024. He suffered another down-year in 2025, but has been on a tear of late in 2026. His most recent hot streak will likely result in a contender overwhelming the Reds with an offer that will end his tenure in Cincinnati.
