The Cincinnati Reds got off to somewhat of a slow start in 2024, and one of the biggest reasons why was the numerous injuries the team incurred during spring training (and into the regular season). Matt McLain and TJ Friedl both missed Opening Day, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand was placed on the IL in early-May. The Reds were also without Noelvi Marte due to a PED suspension.
In order for Cincinnati to get off on the right foot this season, the Reds can ill-afford to go into 2025 with a crippled lineup. But the latest injury news surrounding Spencer Steer is not good, and it could ultimately result in his placement on the IL to begin the season.
Steer was in the Reds' starting lineup for Saturday's Cactus League game against the San Diego Padres, but was replaced at the last minute by Jacob Hurtubise. Steer received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder which will require him to remain inactive for the next couple of days.
Spencer Steer's injury could result in as IL designation before Reds Opening Day
Steer's shoulder has been a problem since last season and h'es has had multiple examinations and scans with each one showing no structural damage — that's the good news. But Steer has been limited to acting as the Reds DH during spring training games, and with Opening Day a little over three weeks away, there's legitimate concern that he may need to open the season on the IL.
Reds manager Terry Francona spoke about the process moving forward, and his comments don't exactly inspire confidence that Steer will be in the Reds lineup on Opening Day. "He played with us last year, and he gutted through it. Doing it again doesn’t seem to make much sense.”
After exam, Reds' Steer elected for cortisone shot, which requires inactivity for at least a couple days. Expecting further update postgame. https://t.co/suxZDAzpMG

Steer was expected to open the season as the Reds first baseman while also logging time in left field and maybe even third base. But without the ability to throw, Steer can do little more than fill in as the Reds' DH. Given the way the Reds roster is constructed, that's not the most ideal use of one of the 26 spots.
Prior to spring training, it was assumed that one of Encarnacion-Strand, Gavin Lux, or Jeimer Candelario would function as the Reds DH while Steer filled in the gaps in the field. Cincinnati may no longer have the luxury, and Steer may find himself on the IL in order to offer him time to heel and give the Reds more flexibility in their lineup.
