The Cincinnati Reds took a flyer when they signed veteran left-hander Wade Miley to a minor league contract this offseason, and early signs suggest it might pay off. Miley, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, took a significant step forward this past Tuesday, facing live hitters for the first time in his rehab process. Miley didn’t just ease in; he cruised his way through the session with the efficiency that’s long been his trademark.

Though exact numbers weren’t provided, reports indicate Miley threw around 20 pitches in roughly five minutes while facing four Reds hitters, a testament to his quick pace and seasoned command. Manager Terry Francona gave his seal of approval, praising Miley’s preparation and readiness as he inches closer to returning to a big-league mound.

At 38 years old, Miley isn’t letting Father Time slow him down. Entering his 15th MLB season, he could find himself in a key role for the Reds, particularly with questions surrounding the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Miley could be a legitimate candidate to step in and solidify the back end of the rotation once his rehab is complete.

Wade Miley could be in line to be part of the Reds starting rotation sooner rather than later

Carson Spiers was named the Reds No. 5 starter on Thursday. The right-hander was in a tight competition with both Graham Ashcraft and Andrew Abbott all spring. Ashcraft will now be pitching out of the Reds bullpen, and Abbott will open the 2025 on the injured list.

Spiers doesn't have nearly the same track record as Miley, meaning his long-term future in the rotation is already in doubt. The fifth spot in the rotation was Ashcraft's to lose, especially with Abbott sidelined for most of the spring. But Ashcraft's poor performance raised serious concerns, and after being tattooed in a number of games this spring, the right-hander will take on a relief role this season.

Miley, however, isn’t looking to rush his return. While he acknowledges there are still hurdles to clear, he has his sights set on April 15 as a potential target date. For a Reds team looking to take the next step and push for a postseason berth, having a battle-tested lefty with a career 4.07 ERA at the back of the rotation could be a stabilizing force.

This is a situation worth monitoring as Opening Day approaches—if Miley continues to progress, the veteran could find himself playing a pivotal role, much to the chagrin of Spiers.
