Reds welcome back Nick Lodolo but it comes at a painful cost

Sort of a good news, bad news situation.

On Wednesday, the Cincinnati Reds activated Nick Lodolo from the injured list ahead of the series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Reds starter had been sidelined for the past few weeks after suffering a blister on his left hand.

Unfortunately, Lodolo's activation came with some troubling news that right-hander Graham Ashcraft will now go to the 15-day IL with a forearm strain. The Reds' reliever underwent an MRI on Tuesday after complaining of pain in and around his right wrist. This will likely thrust Nick Martinez back into the bullpen, though he's unlikely to be available today after throwing over 100 pitches on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.

Lodolo will get the ball for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers and their starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani. The last time Ohtani took the mound against the Reds, he only lasted into the fourth inning after suffering cramping in his right hip.

The Reds are going to need a strong outing from Lodolo to help salvage what's been a disappointing road trip out west. Heading into the series finale, the Reds have gone 3-5 on their three-city tour, and if they're unable to win on Wednesday, it'll be the first time all season Terry Francona's club will have been swept by an opponent.

Before being halted by a blister issue on his left hand, Lodolo was arguably having his best season to date. Until that fateful trip to the IL, Lodolo had answered the bell and was available for every single start this season. The lefty is 8-6 on the year with a 3.05 ERA and 124 punch outs over 23 starts.

Cincinnati needs that same version of Lodolo back on the bump for the team's stretch run as they currently sit 3½ games back of the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card race. Depending on how the Reds' rotation unfolds, Cincinnati could have Lodolo on the mound next weekend when the Mets pay a visit to Great American Ball Park.
