The Cincinnati Reds are in need of some help in the outfield. Last winter, the Reds signed former Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Austin Hays in hopes that he could help bring some stability to a position that Cincinnati had neglected for years. Unfortunately, Hays was on and off the injured list all season, and the Reds declined his option shortly after the offseason began.

The latest Reds rumors, however, indicate that Cincinnati is looking to shore up the outfield in a different way this offseason. Rather than go through the free agent bargain bin like they usually do, the Reds are evaluating the trade route. According to MLB.com beat writer Brian McTaggart, Cincinnati is one of many teams who are interested in trading for Houston Astros centerfielder Jake Meyers.

In addition to the Reds, the Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox have all shown interest in Meyers at this week's Winter Meetings. Whether a deal gets done before teams leave Orlando on Thursday is anyone's guess. Houston is reportedly seeking controllable starting pitching in return for Meyers' services, and that's something Cincinnati has in abundance.

Reds Rumors: Cincy among the many teams interested in Astros CF Jake Meyers

Meyers enjoyed a breakout season in 2025. While he spent some time on the IL due to a right calf strain, he returned in September for the Astros playoff push; one that ultimately fell short. Meyers, however, was certainly not to blame for Houston's shortcomings last season. He hit .292/.354/.373 with a 107 wRC+, and was worth 5 defensive runs saved (DRS) and 9 outs above average (OAA).

Meyers fits the bill for the Reds. He's still just 29 years old and has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining. Meyers bats from the right side, and while he doesn't offer much power, his glove has always been his carrying tool. With the Reds' emphasis on defense, and desire to give TJ Friedl some days off, Meyers could be the perfect fit for Cincinnati.

The Astros need starting depth, and the Reds could give them the best opportunity to upgrade their rotation heading into 2026. Houston lost their ace (Framber Valdez) to free agency, and several of the starters on their current roster are set to open next season on the IL.
