Reds Rumors: Hunter Greene trade buzz growing after latest revelation

Don't look now folks, but Hunter Greene might not be as untouchable as many Cincinnati Reds fans assume. In fact, the latest Reds rumors suggest that Nick Krall and the front office are at least listening to offers from rival team execs.

According USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale, the Reds are intrigued just to see what they could command on the market. Nightengale went on to write that Cincinnati is interested to see "if someone blows them away."

That's a dressed-up way of saying the Reds aren't necessarily shopping Greene, but they're not hanging up the phone either. This feels a continuation from the trade chatter that grew legs during the offseason, and one has to wonder how much truth there is behind these emerging Reds rumors.

Reds Rumors: Is Hunter Greene really on the trade block?

Because of elbow surgery just before the start of the season, Greene has been limited to just three starts in 2026. But every GM throughout the league knows that when he's healthy, Greene is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball.

Greene's lack of availability, however, is exactly why the Reds' front office might be willing to actually listen to offers from other teams. He's had a difficult time staying off the IL, and only covered 107⅔ innings in 19 starts last season. Greene will fall woefully short of his preseason goals once again, and the 150⅓ innings he pitched in 2024 remain the high water mark for his career.

Greene's six-year, $53 million deal he signed in 2022 makes the idea of trading him rather ludicrous. A small market franchise like the Reds need as many team-friendly contracts as they can get. But his salary is set to nearly double next season, and will cost Cincinnati upwards of $15 million.

Greene's All-Star capabilities and team-friendly deal — one that runs through 2029 — would command an absolute haul at this year's trade deadline. With Tarik Skubal and Joe Ryan looking less and less likely to be dealt, Greene could quickly become the most-prized trade target ahead of August 3 deadline.
