Reds Prospect Update: Ichiro Cano's breakout, Ruben Ibarra's career-mark, Austin Hendrick

The Cincinnati Reds' playoff hopes have been on life support for the better part of a month, but two of the organization's minor league affiliates are enjoying a postseason run. The Daytona Tortugas and Dayton Dragons are battling for the Florida State League and Midwest League championships, respectively.

The Tortugas dropped their first postseason contest to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday, and will play Game 2 of a three-game series on Thursday evening. The Dragons also dropped their series opener against the Great Lakes Loons, with Game 2 scheduled for Thursday night at a sold-out Day Air Ballpark.

Reds prospect Ichiro Cano is enjoying a breakout season

One of the Tortugas' shining stars this season has been Ichiro Cano. An international signee out of Mexico in 2024, Cano has spent the entire 2026 season with the Reds' Low-A affiliate and has put up some fantastic numbers.

In 110 games at Low-A Daytona, Cano is hitting .297/.412/.422 with seven home runs, 64 RBI, and a 125 wRC+. The 21-year-old can play multiple positions, but is most often deployed at third base. Cano doesn't rank among the Reds' top-30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline, but he could be a name to watch in 2027.

Reds slugger Ruben Ibarra sets a new career-high in HRs

Ruben Ibarra is another obscure name in the Reds' farm system. Much like Cano, he doesn't rank among Cincinnati's top prospects, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't been a force in the Chattanooga Lookouts lineup this season.

On Wednesday, Ibarra set a new career-high with his 22nd home run of the 2026 season. The former fourth-round pick absolutely tattooed a ball during the bottom of the second inning off Los Angeles Angels right-handed pitching prospect Austin Gordon and sent it over the left-center field wall.

Ibarra is a slugger is every sense of the word. He's spent the past two seasons with the Reds Double-A affiliate in southeast Tennessee and has combined to hit 43 homers and rack up 148 RBI since 2025. Look for Ibarra to get a chance to compete against top-level competition at Triple-A Louisville next season.

Former Reds first-rounder Austin Hendrick is still struggling after demotion

The Reds gave former first-round pick Austin Hendrick his big break earlier this season. After years of toiling in the lower-levels of the minor leagues, Hendrick was promoted to Triple-A Louisville in mid-May. Unfortunately, the competition proved to be too much, and he was sent back to Double-A late last month.

Sadly, Hendrick's struggles have continued since returning to the Lookouts roster on August 21. He's hitting just .136/.215/.288 with a 30.8% strikeout rate. On Wednesday, Hendrick walloped his fourth homer since returning to Chattanooga, but it's looking more and more like he'll receive the dreaded 'bust' label and could be released this coming winter.
