Earlier this week, Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitcher Randy Wynne decided to enter free agency. The 32-year-old journeyman made his Major League debut back in 2023 and made just one appearance with the Reds in 2025.
Interestingly enough, however, Wynne's lone appearance out of the Reds' bullpen this past season saw him achieve a feat that is rarely seen in baseball today. Wynne notched his first and only Major League save, but did so by pitching the final three innings of the Reds blowout-win over the Baltimore Orioles on April 20 at Camden Yards.
Cincinnati won that game going away by the final score of 24-2. Most fans will remember that was the game when former catcher Austin Wynns went 6-for-7 with six RBI, including a home run in the ninth inning off Orioles catcher Gary Sánchez.

Oddly enough, this was a bullpen game for the Reds that was started by reliever Brent Suter. The lefty began the contest by logging three innings and allowed just one run on three hits. Suter was then replaced Ian Gibaut. Taylor Rogers and Scott Barlow, and Wynne entered during the seventh inning. Collectively, Cincy's relief corps allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out nine Orioles' batters.
Wynne went three strong, and allowed just one earned run on three hits. Adley Rutschman's solo home run was the only damage done, and after Wynne got O's centerfielder Cedric Mullins to strike out looking to end the game, the right-hander collected his first big-league save.
For those unaware, there are three ways a pitcher can record a save. The traditional way, and the path most pitchers take nowadays, is entering the game with no more than a three-run lead and pitching at least one inning — typically the ninth. Pitchers can also secure a save when they come in and finish the game with the tying run in the on-deck circle, at the plate, or on the bases, or by pitching the final three innings of a game.
Wynne's been part of the Reds organization since 2019, and fans surely wish him the best of luck going forward.
