There's still plenty of spots up for grabs.

The Cincinnati Reds announced their first round of spring cuts on Monday, and Michael Toglia was among the six players reassigned to minor-league camp. The slugger had 35 home runs over the past two seasons combined with the Colorado Rockies, but he went just 2-for-9 in eight Cactus League games with the Reds and has yet to hit a home run this spring.

Toglia wasn't alone, however. Among the other players reassigned to minor-league camp were Connor Burns, Michael Chavis, Cam Collier, Carson Spiers, and Joel Valdez. The Reds major-league camp roster now stands at 51 players. They'll need to cut that number to 26 before Opening Day.

Reds thin the ranks after first round of roster cuts

Toglia and Chavis are arguably the two biggest names among the first round of roster cuts. Both players have multiple years of big-league experience, though neither was seen as a lock to make the Reds Opening Day roster.

Toglia was signed before the Reds added Eugenio Suárez and Nathaniel Lowe to the roster. Once that happened, what little chance Toglia had to break camp with the big-league club quickly evaporated. If he accepts an outright assignment to Triple-A, he'll begin his 2026 campaign with the Louisville Bats.

Burns and Collier are two of Cincinnati's top prospects — both of whom received a non-roster invite to big-league camp. Both players finished the 2025 season at Double-A Chattanooga and that's likely where they'll begin play once the 2026 minor league season gets underway.

After suffering a devastating elbow injury last season, Spiers was released to open up a spot on the Reds 40-man roster. Cincinnati quickly re-signed him, however, and will allow the right-hander to spend the 2026 season rehabbing at the team's facility in Arizona.

Valdez was selected by the Reds during the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft last December. He was shutdown earlier this spring after suffering a shoulder injury.

More cuts will be on the way in the coming days, with several other non-roster invitees likely to get the axe. But players like Tejay Antone, Lyon Richardson, and the aforementioned Lowe all have a tremendous opportunity to survive this year's spring battles and make the Reds Opening Day roster.
