Reds News: Matt McLain adds another position, Noelvi Marte's DOWL debut, Alejo Lopez
Another one.
The Cincinnati Reds have been rather quiet through the first couple weeks of the 2024-25 offseason. Though not yet confirmed, it appears that right-hander Nick Martinez will sign the qualifying offer extended to him last week. But outside of that, it's been radio silence from the Reds' front office.
A handful of Reds prospects did take part in the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game over the weekend. Edwin Arroyo, Jose Acuña, and Luis Mey all participated in the annual event that bring together the top contributors from the AFL.
Reds News: Matt McLain plays 3B in Arizona Fall League
Speaking of the AFL, Matt McLain has been receiving some extra reps himself this offseason. Sidelined due to multiple injuries this past season, McLain was sent to Arizona to be part of the Glendale Desert Dogs roster this fall. On Sunday, McLain reminded everyone just how talented he truly is with a multi-home run performance.
On Tuesday, McLain was back in the lineup once again, but this time was lining up at third base. McLain has already seen time at second base and center field this offseason, and the young star now has another position under his belt. With so many infielders, McLain's versatility could help the Reds maximize their entire roster next season.
Reds News: Noelvi Marte makes his debut in the Dominican Winter League
Noelvi Marte, who had an awful rookie year in 2024, will be headed to the Dominican Winter League this offseason with an eye toward getting back on track. A PED suspension, poor effort on defense, and a subpar offensive performance has some Reds fans even questioning whether or not Marte will break camp with team next season.
The 22-year-old will get a chance to improve his standing with the team after being named to the Gigantes del Cibao in the DOWL. Marte's spot on next year's roster is far from a guarantee, but perhaps the extra reps this winter will help boost his confidence heading into Goodyear next spring.
Reds News: Alejo Lopez signs MiLB deal with the A's
A fan favorite during his time in Cincinnati, Alejo Lopez is on the move once again. The former Reds utility player inked a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves shortly after the 2023 season, but this year, he'll be headed to Sacramento.
The A's signed Lopez to minor-league pact and he's expected to be a non-roster invitee to spring training. The A's will not be playing in Oakland next season, but instead will set up shop in Sacramento, California while their new digs are being built in Las Vegas, Nevada.
